Strengths: Fast DVD write/rewrite speed. Compatibility with wide variety of media. Multiformat capability.
Weaknesses: Lack of direct support in U.S. from manufacturer -- must go to European web site for technical support. Firmware updates are via dedicated users rather than from nanufacturer, at least to date.
Summary: This is a superb piece of equipment -- it is fast, compatible and quiet. It one of the fastest (if not the fastest) multiformat +/- R/RW DVD writers out there. The construction is quite solid. It does a great job of writing to both CD and DVDs. Strongly recommended,provided the lack of direct support from manufacturer doesn't deter you.

Strengths: Good price for hight speed and function
Weaknesses: no software
Summary: I bought 3 days ago and I write one CD and One DVD.
It works fine. I have no any problem with it yet.
If you buy it from Newegg you can have five free DVD-R Disk.

Strengths: fast, cheap, stable and excellent
Weaknesses: haven't fount any weakness yet!!!
Summary: Excellent DVD writer, bar none! Great price, very quiet, and the fastest I've ever owned. Approaching 100 DVDs burned on this burner, not one coaster! Media used: Newegg brand DVD-R 4x, Ritek G04 DVD-R 4x, Memorex DVD+R 4x, TDK DVD+R 4x (I get 6x off these consistently), and Verbatim DVD+R 8x (@ 8.3x). With Verbatims I've burned full video DVDs under 8.5 minutes, now that's fast!!! Works with Nero 5/6, Alcohol 120%, CloneCD, RecordNow! Max, DVD2one + CopyToDVD, InterVideo DVD Copy v2, DVD Decrypter, Pinnacle InstantCopy 8, and Cyberlink PowerDVD 5. No regrets, buy one and never look back! Highly recommended!!!
Fantastic drive. It was cheap, arrived extremely quickly and Newegg was kind enough to send some very high quality DVD-Rs. The first DVD I tried to backup was scratched up and the video froze at certain points. I was wondering if it would work at all. Imagine my surprise when the movie played flawlessly!

Summary: This burner from NEC (ND2500A) does not have any weaknesses, Received in three days, was promised in five days. New egg and NEC are both at the top of my list when I need any computer hardware item

Strengths: I did not try it for DVDs, but CDs. The performance is amazing. I own a good CD Writer, and this is no inferior to that. I am very much impressed with it's performance.
Weaknesses: I dint find any so far, I will keep posting if find any.
Summary: The DVD payaing is also amazing, I started renting the DVDs, because I have the DVD player with my system now :) The most impressing factor about this DVD player is it's price. I was looking for a Writer for the past 6 months, but did not like any. The first time I see a writer which supports 8x, I thought it would be very costly, after I see the price, it is amazing. Overall this product is cheap and best among all the DVD writers we have in the market now !!!

Strengths: Great burn times,
Very quiet,
Vibration free.
Weaknesses: None that I can think of
Summary: This device is a very good buy. 8x burning is great, you'll never want to go back to 4x. Thoroughly tested with many types of media. Some off-brand media won't get burn speeds above the posted speed (4x) without making coasters. I would recommend buying name brand 4x media and trying that, or if all else fails just find 8x media to buy. I personally have been burning fine at 8x on Ritek media.
I would definately recommend purchasing this drive to *anyone* in the market for a DVD burner. Heck, at the price, consider buying it anyway!

 The burner works great almost two weeks and burned ... Strengths: Multi formats
Weaknesses: Problem to read some of the source medias.
Summary: The burner works great almost two weeks and burned about 25 plus disks then start having read problem on some source medias, finally it quit working, the drive did not recognize any medias either blank or data. I bought this burner base on all the good reviews but I may have a bad drive will send back for exchange try again. I had Pioneer A05 for two years and did not have any problems make perfect copy every time so I feel NEC might have to improve their product quality.

Summary: I purchased this burner from Gooddealpc.com and have yet to have a problem. I got the Legacy DVD-R black media and that works great for only $30 for a 50 pack. I am mainly using the drive for backing up my DVD collection, and under 10 minutes a burn help with that a lot. I don't understand why anyone would spend over a $100 on a burner when this one is available!

Strengths: Super quiet, no coasters yet

Summary: This has been a great drive so far, very quiet and fast.
Works great with cheaper discs. Have backed up lots a files
on my hard drive. Would highly recommend this drive to anyone needing a DVD drive. The price was great for an 8X burner.

Strengths: Great price for the fast performance and great quality.

Summary: 2004-05-04 10:01:53 Purchased OEM version from newegg.com with no accompying software or maunuals. The burner was connected as the secondary IDE slave with no problems on a 1Ghz Windows XP Pro machine. Burned approximately 20 DVDs and 10 CDs with this burner and haven't made a coaster yet. Speed was great and drive was extremely quiet. Burning DVDs from TDK 2.4x DVD+RW, Ritek 4x DVD-R, Imation 4x DVD+R, and Comp-USA 1x DVD-R medias had no problems or issues.

Summary: I have had nothing but trouble with this drive. It's not clear where the problem lies. The DVD software support suggests that I update the firmware for this drive. Checking the NEC website, there are no drivers or support for this drive. The drive is OEM only, and I am directed to contact the computer manufacturer. Hmmm, I put the computer together, and the retail merchant that sold me this drive has no technical support.

Strengths: Burns consistently and with a wide array of discs; also relatively cheap
Weaknesses: burns slow (even with firewire)
Summary: It's a solid deal. It's OEM, but if you have XP or Windows 2000 you don't need any drivers. If you're running Windows 98 SE or below, you'll have to do some searching for the drivers. Other than burning slightly slow, it's a great DVD-RW.
